That’s one small step for man. One giant leap for mankind.
I think most, if not all, of us have heard those words spoken at a crucial time in history. And while taking a step onto the moon was a CRAZY big step, I think we miss out on our dreams or breakthroughs because we think our next step is too big.
Anyone tracking with me?
We get stuck in perfection and we never cross the finish line on a project because the next step seems too big.
We never write the book we always wanted to write because the next step feels too big.
We never become a pilot because the getting started step seems too big. (That was me for a long season).
We never leave the safety of a job that is strangling us because of the fear of the next step.
We stay afraid of Monday because making a step towards changing it seems too big.
We leave our dreams in our minds because the next step seems too big and too scary.
All of these have been a part of my story…
The story doesn’t have to end there. If it had, I would be full of regret. Full of should. As my father has often said- Never should on yourself! Wise words from a wise man.
The point it brings up is this- will we move forward into the somewhat scary unknown or will we let fear tell us that the next step is too big?
I think the biggest regrets we have later in life will be the things we never did. The ways we didn’t get out of the boat. The risks we didn’t take. I am not saying throw caution to the wind and go for it, but I am sharing a gentle reminder that we get one chance at this life and I don’t want to miss out!
Who’s with me?
And what if the next step towards your dream, new reality, or breakthrough isn’t as big as you thought?
what if all you had to do was take A step? Any step will do. Just a little forward momentum in the right direction?
For Mondays it was having a better routine on Sunday.
For pilot license it was making a phone call.
For becoming a speaker and coach it was starting to post, blog, and have great conversations.
For some days it is just getting out of bed.
For writing a book it started with some journalling with no expectations.
For some big dreams it was simply being vulnerable enough to share that dream out loud and get it out of the dark and into the light.
And all of these scenarios had one thing in common- I was closer than I thought. And the next step wasn’t that big.
Sometimes we just need to take A step. Any step.
So today. Or this week. Or tomorrow. Instead of worrying about the size of the step, just take a step. And you will be that much closer. And then you can truly believe that #gooddaysareahead.
A perfect opportunity to #WINtheNOW!
